US Open 2023: World No.1 Novak Djokovic has received a good news soon after his Australian Open victory. The Serbian has been granted a green light to feature in the US Open this year as President Joe Biden’s administration on Monday said it will end COVID-19 emergency declarations on May 11. Djokovic, who is not vaccinated against Covid-19 was not allowed to enter the country last year. The 35-year old will however miss the upcoming Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open. After the outbreak of Covid-19, the United States imposed strict pandemic measures to curb the spread of the viral disease. Last year only the tourists who were vaccinated were allowed t0 enter the country. This made Djokovic miss all the tournaments that were played in the US in 2022.
This year too it was unsure whether he would be allowed to enter the country. This decision by the US government however comes as a relief to the World No.1. Djokovic is now likely to not miss any Grand Slam tournaments this year.
Earlier this month, during the Australian Open, Djokovic had expressed his desire to play in the US soon, ““I hope I can play in Indian Wells. That is my wish. It is still not allowed but maybe in the next few weeks I will get better news.” However his wish to feature in the year’s first ATP 1000 event has come to a crashing end.
The Indian Wells Masters is scheduled to be held from 8th to 19th March 2023. It will be followed by the Miami Open from 22nd March, which is another ATP 1000 event. Since both the events will be played before May, Djokovic will not be allowed to enter the country to feature in these tournaments.
Djokovic last played at the US Open in 2021. He finished as runner-up in that edition. The winner of 22 Grand Slam event
