India Playing XI vs England: Rohit Sharma’s COVID-19 test has put India in a spot of bother ahead of the IND vs ENG 5th Test. Head coach Rahul Dravid will not only have to find a new skipper, but also an opening partner for Shubman Gill.

With KL Rahul also ruled out, India have summoned Mayank Agarwal to the UK. Should Rohit miss out, Bumrah will take up the captain’s armband while Agarwal would replace him in the XI. The Karnataka star however has had little batting practice in the conditions which could prompt the team management to consider other options.

KS Bharat was asked to open the batting in the warm-up game, and the wicketkeeper gave a good account of himself. The Karnataka star is yet to make his Test debut, but his warm up heroics could prompt India to go with him at the top.

India Playing XI vs England: Who will open with Shubman Gill?

  • Rohit Sharma has to produce two negative RT-PCR test results by June 29 to be able to travel to Birmingham.
  • But if he doesn’t manage to clear it, India will not only need to find a captain but also an opener.
  • Mayank Agarwal has been called up as a backup opener but considering he will have just three days of practice, he is unlikely.
  • Hanuma Vihari and Cheteshwar Pujara are two other options. But considering India’s middle-order woes, Pujara is likely to remain at No 3.
  • As for the opening option, it is between Vihari and KS Bharat.
  • Rahul Dravid did try out KS Bharat as an opener in the warm-up and he was largely successful.
  • But Bharat has never opened in first-class games and sending him to face James Anderson and Stuart Broad could be detrimental.
  • For now, Shubman is likely to open with Hanuma Vihari if Rohit is ruled out.

Virat Kohli’s return to form was pleasing for India. However, the rest crumbled further highlighting India’s batting concerns. As things stand, Pujara is likely to return to No. 3, while Vihari would take the other middle-order slot. Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja would make up rest of the lineup.

Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami will partner with Jasprit Bumrah in the pace attack. The latter has been named as standby for the captain’s role and could be named skipper should Rohit miss out.

Depending on the conditions, India will make a call on their combination with Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur fighting for a sole spot. Ashwin returned to the team in style with two wickets in his only day’s action. However, Thakur would be the likely option should the surface help the seamers more.
