Though Ravindra Jadeja is with the Indian team, he did not bowl, and neither did he take part in any training session. This forced Rahul Dravid to opt for an emergency nets bowler. Though the move from Dravid was quite surprising, this helped the Indian batters get used to a left-arm spinner. Amir Ali a young left-arm orthodox bowler was used by the Indian team during the practice session.

The West Indies boasts of having two fine left-arm spinners in the likes of Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie and thus this youngster named Ali was brought into the Indian practice session to get the Indian batters prepared. Ali was seen bowling to young Indian opener Shubman Gill for a long time. Shreyas Iyer too sweated it out a lot in the practice session.

Ali reportedly spent 30 mins practicing with the Indian squad. Post the training session, Rahul Dravid spoke and discussed with Ali and other young players of the squad how to improve their game.

Why did Rahul Dravid OPT for a LEFT-ARM Spinner in the Nets?

  • Off late Indian batters have constantly struggled against the slow left-arm spinners. Therefore this was a good experience and practice ahead of the important game.
  • Dravid and Co had to opt for a local nets bowler as Ravindra Jadeja has been injured. Though Jadeja is with the team, he did not bowl.
  • Jadeja is doubtful for the upcoming games and can miss the entire ODI series after picking up a niggle on his left knee.
  • This practice session was needed as West Indies has two good left-arm spinners in the likes of Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie.
  • The young nets bowler Amir Ali spent 30 mins bowling to the Indian batters. YOung opener Shubhman Gill spent the most time facing this young local bowler.

“It was a great experience bowling to an international batsman. I learned a lot, and coach Rahul Dravid gave some good input. It is stepping stone in my career and it was a great experience,” said the young bowler Amir Ali.
