PV Sindhu, who won the championship in 2018 is the Indian with most podium finishes in the tournament so far. She has two silver medals and two bronze medals respectively. Last year, Sindhu suffered quarterfinal exit as she lost to Tai Tzu Ying in straight sets. This year too Sindhu has some big challenges ahead in the tournament.

The world No.7 is placed in the second quarter of the draw and got a bye in the first round. In the second round, she will either face China’s Han Yue or France’s Qi Xuefei. In the third round, Sindhu is likely to face World No.11 Wang Zhi Yi. Though Sindhu has a 2-0 record against the Chinese, the 11th seed brings with her a challenge and it won’t be a cakewalk to beat her.

In the quarterfinals, Sindhu will face her nemesis World No.3 An Se-young of South Korea. Both the players have played five times in the past and Sindhu is yet to win a single contest. An Se-young has totally dominated against Sindhu and they have met two times this year at the Korean Open and Uber Cup. In both the matches, Sindhu faced straight set defeats.

Sindhu has had a decent year as she won the Syed Modi International, Swiss Open and Singapore Open, however she has struggled against opponents who are ranked higher than her and Sindhu really need to be at the top of her game to make a deep run in the World Championships.
