Plotting The Information’s expansion plans

Jessica Lessin

Steven Perlberg of Business Insider examines tech news site The Information’s growth under founder Jessica Lessin.

Perlberg writes, “Lately, The Information has sought to broaden its scope with the weekend lifestyle section and newsletters covering the creator economy and cryptocurrency. It created a subscription publication, The Electric, covering batteries, electric vehicles, and autonomous driving. The Information also launched a social network for subscribers, Axios reported.

“Whether The Information can meaningfully expand beyond its core coverage areas of tech and media and continue to grow its subscriber base, is an open question. A prior initiative to break into Washington policy coverage sputtered out, for instance, former staffers said.

“But Lessin is now setting her sights on Wall Street — about one-third of The Information’s audience works in financial services, she said. Becker, who was the deputy deals-bureau chief at The Wall Street Journal, will oversee financial coverage and an expansion of its team.

“‘I think we’re not trying to boil the ocean,’ Lessin said of The Information’s growth plans. ‘We’re trying to look around corners and drive and own every important narrative.’”
