Chess Olympiad Closing Ceremony: Former Indian Cricket Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be the Chief guest of the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad Closing ceremony, which will be held in Chennai on Tuesday, 9th August 2022. The Chess Olympiad kickstarted in the city on 28th July and players from 187 countries participated in the tournament. The 12-day event will conclude on Tuesday with the closing ceremony.

The event, which was originally scheduled to be held in Ukraine had to be moved out of the country following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Chess governing body FIDE decided to give India the hosting rights with Chennai being selected as the host city. The Olympiad kickstarted with a grand opening ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium while all the matches were played in Mamallapuram, close to the city.

After 11 days of intense action that attracted lot of spectators beeling towards the coastal city, a grand closing ceremony is scheduled to be held on Tuesday with Dhoni being the chief guest. MS Dhoni’s association with Chennai began ever since he was appointed as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings in 2008. Over the past decade and half, Dhoni led the IPL franchise to four titles. Dhoni also co-owns the city’s ISL football team Chennaiyin FC.

Meanwhile, India is fighting hard to win the title at the tournament. In the Open section, after 9 rounds Uzbekistan tops the table with 16 match points, while India 2 team that has Praggnanandhaa and D Gukesh are in the second spot. Another Indian team in the Open section are in the fourth spot. Meanwhile, India women’s team 1 comprising the likes of Koneru Humpy and Vaishali are in the second spot. Final two rounds are scheduled to be played on Tuesday.
