India vs Afghanistan – Captain Rohit Sharma is likely to bring back Dinesh Karthik into the fold following India’s back-to-back losses in the Super 4s stage. Karthik was dropped from the team in favour of Deepak Hooda for the games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, but India suffered in the death overs in both those games.
With Hardik Pandya bowling his full quota of overs, Karthik can dovetail as India’s designated finisher. Rishabh Pant meanwhile should continue to get a longer rope in the middle order, despite his lacklustre performances in the last two matches.

After experimenting with Ravi Bishnoi and Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma will finally have a third pacer to rely on in Deepak Chahar. Chahar was named as a backup for the tournament but Avesh Khan’s problems with sinus meant that the CSK pacer had to fly in. Khan missed the games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, further hurting India’s chances.
India Playing XI: What changes Rohit Sharma could make?
- Deepak Hooda’s struggles should see Dinesh Karthik return to the side as a finisher.
- India struggled to score runs quickly in the death overs in their defeats and Karthik’s return should address that.
- Avesh Khan has officially been ruled out following complications with his sinus
- Deepak Chahar has been drafted in as a replacement and should feature on Thursday.
- Rishabh Pant and Kl Rahul are likely to hold onto their place on the side.
- Ravichandran Ashwin will make for Chahar, while Bishnoi and Axar Patel are also likely to be benched.
India (Playing XI): KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma(c), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant(w), Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Deepak Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh
