How Tech Crunch reporter Azevedo finds story ideas

TechCrunch senior reporter Mary Ann Azevedo spoke with Jessica Lawlor of Muck Rack about her job.

Can you share what it’s like covering the world of fintech? How do you typically find story ideas and angles?

I feel like I got to start covering fintech at a critical time in its growth! The space exploded in 2020 and continued to grow in 2021.

Things have calmed down some this year, but it’s still a dynamic—and extremely important—industry. I’m drawn to companies that are trying to make a real change in the world and help boost inclusion or broaden access to more populations. There was a point where it became hard to tell companies apart because there were so many in a given area. So now one of the most important questions I have for companies who pitch me is, “What is your differentiator? What makes what you do different/better than other companies out there?”

I’m also drawn to nontraditional founders, or those who started companies based on their own needs or personal experiences.
